Sorry kids for the long break, But back with an absolute killer!
Brought to you by no other than WHATEVER WE WANT label boss Thomas Bullock (Map of Africa, Rub N Tug, Bobbie Marie and founding member of A.R.E. Weapons) who hooks up with Eddie Ruscha (Secret Circuit, Future Pigeon, Dada Munchamonkey) under the name THE LAUGHING LIGHT OF PLENTY to bring you another essential piece of Whatever We Want vinyl. “The Rose” is described as “a funky 4/4 Balearic psyche-disco groover that hints at The Stone Roses in the vocal phrasing” (for those of you who like a break down). Importantly it features guitar, big piano and some synth knob twiddling, the track also has a fantastic vocal that will have you singing along after a couple of listens. On the flip “Listen Here” goes for the “electro-acoustic shuffle and great pop edge”. If you don’t have this yet, then move quickly as per usual it is ultra limited (as all WWEW releases are), even the mp3 was hard to find. This has me all excited about music after a quiet summer. The Laughing Light of Plenty - The Rose
Gangsounds has been unofficially on a summer holiday, so sorry for not posting any new stuff here in a while.
I really haven’t heard any new records in a month or so, but Fleet Foxes’ debut album has been on my daily rotation for several weeks now. Quite rare nowadays, when most albums seem to get boring in few days.. Sub Pop continues to set the standards in indie rock as DFA does it in electro.
Like the man, the myth, Burt Pahkala said in Stupido Shop’s newsletter a while ago; “My Morning Jacket meets Band Of Horses in Seattle’s woods!”. I just can’t describe Fleet Foxes’ self titled album better, so thanks Burt for making this post easy for me!
Remember kids, you read it here first; Burt Pahkala will be Poika Ja Hirviö’s regular guest at Erottaja Bar from now on, so we’ll change our monthly club’s name to PAHKALA, KALAOJA & FILOSOF. This doesn’t mean that we’d leave our alter ego names behind.. and there’s more to come of course. keep lurking that facebook if you want to see us spinning them plates.
I had to wait for this rare gem for over a month to arrive from sunny California to rainy Helsinki, but whatever, i finally got it few minutes ago and there couldn’t be a better way to start a week than this!
Mark Kozelek’s Nights Of Passed Over was published first in Portugal couple years ago, but this is the official release in english which includes Kozelek’s introduction, a lot of scans from original set lists etc. etc. and of course all the lyrics from Red House Painters’ and Sun Kil Moon’s albums. On top of that there’s a bonus CD included, Nights LP. It includes 12 tracks of rare takes and live recordings.
The book was 52 USD incl. shippings from Caldo Verde’s website (Kozelek’s own label)
My tune of the week is my all time favorite Kozelek song, Duk Koo Kim. I had to post both versions, the original and the 10″ version (included in Nights LP).
The original version is over 14 minutes long, and the name of the song comes from a lightweight boxer Duk Koo Kim (1959-1982) who fell into coma after a 14 round boxing match against Ray Mancini, and died 5 days later because of brain damage. Kim’s mother committed a suicide 4 months after the tragic fight, and the referee of the match killed himself few months after, because he blamed himself for allowing the match go on for too long.
Quite a heavy story, which brings even more dramatic mood to the song. It’s not the easiest way to get known to Kozelek’s music, but believe me, it’s worth the effort.
I had to upload the 10″ version to zshare ’cause there was some problems with the gangsounds media upload thingy, sorry for that.
If you haven’t been keeping track, the legendary band Sparks (coming to Tavastia on Monday the 16th — next week!) have been playing an equally legendary residency at London’s Islington Academy.
Tonight they are playing the 20th(!) of 21 shows these past weeks where they play, chronologically, each of their albums in full.
“How do we best unveil our new album, Sparks as yet untitled twenty first?” the brothers Ron and Russell Mael were quoted as saying, “How about playing in concert every single song off of every album that preceded it, all 20 albums on 20 consecutive nights, culminating in the premiere of our latest? That’s approximately 250 songs, or for you musicians, 4 million, 825 thousand, 273 notes. Come celebrate each and every one of those notes with us!”
Yes, it is a shame we can’t be there tonight for their live performance of their 2006 now-classic Hello Young Lovers, but we can tune into a video streaming site - and see the whole thing for ourselves.
Showtime is about 23:00 Finnish time, or 21:00 in London, tune in earlier to catch the warm up band and atmosphere.
Last night I watched their performance of their “comeback” album ‘Lil Beethoven, and but for a few video glitches, the whole thing was very watchable and had very good sound (not from the soundboard, but overhead mics, and got the bonus of audience sounds and intimacy, but without that nasty beer stink and pushing and shoving etc.)
On Friday night (the 13th) they will also be streaming the live premier of their new album “Exotic Creatures of the Deep,” which is now playing on my deck.
Rumours on the allsparks.com forums suggest that they will likely do the “Exotic Creatures of the Deep” in its entirety in Helsinki next week, as well as some greatest hits stuff.
Helsinki has been all about that french house sound this spring, and Whitest Boy Alive - Golden Cage (Fred Falke remix) still remains to be the most played tune this year in the best bars and clubs here, i believe that this Ladyhawke tune will create almost the same fuzz sooner or later. Once again, it’s Fred Falke’s remix.
By the way, there’s some rumors that Fred Falke would come later this year to a dj gig at Redrum. I’m keeping my fingers crossed!
Just how much better can it get? Santogold has been confirmed as support for the Björk show at Finlandia House in Helsinki on 10th July. Santogold is one of the hottest new female artists this year, after working with Spank Rock and Mark Ronson last year, she has just released her debut album. If you haven’t yet heard, check out these two gems right here!

Toukokuun lopulla Helsingissä nähdään yksi tämän hetken kuumimmista underground-artisteista, kun yhdysvaltalainen Juiceboxxx saapuu ensivierailulle Suomeen. DJ/rappari/tuottaja konsertoi Kuudennella Linjalla tiistaina 27. päivä toukokuuta.
Juiceboxxxilta ilmestyi viime vuonna ”R U There God?? Itz Me, Juiceboxxx” -niminen EP sekä ”Sweat”- ja ”Center Stage” -singlet yhdessä Dre Skullin kanssa. Nouseva levymerkki IHEARTCOMIX (mm. Matt & Kim) julkaisee tämän vuoden aikana vielä yhden uuden Juiceboxxx-singlen. Remixejä miehen kappaleista ovat tehneet muun muassa XXXChange, Drop The Limesta tuttu Curses! ja DJ Technics. Juiceboxxx on saanut näkyvyyttä myös Yhdysvaltain MTV:llä, jossa ”Thunder Jam III” -kappaleen video on ollut kovassa rotaatiossa.
Aiemmin muun muassa Bonde Do Rolen ja The Death Setin kanssa esiintynyt Juiceboxxx tunnetaan erityisesti villeistä keikoistaan, joissa alastomuus ja yleisön seassa riehuminen ovat arkipäivää. Kuudes Linja on artistin ainoa pysähdys Pohjoismaissa tällä kiertueella, joka vie miehen esiintymään Helsingin lisäksi muun muassa Dot To Dot -festivaaleille Englantiin Bloc Party DJ:iden, Dan Deaconin ja Hercules & Lover Affairin kaltaisten artistien kanssa.
Lämmittelijänä nähdään hiljattain brittiläiselle Planet Mu -merkille (mm. Venetian Snares, Vex´d) kiinnitetty ja Sonar-festivaaleilla tulevana kesänä esiintyvä kotimainen skwee-artisti Eero Johannes. Levyjä pyörittävät DJ´t Poika ja Hirviö. Liput keikalle maksavat 10 euroa, ja ennakkolippuja myyvät Tiketin toimipisteet kautta maan.

”Like a party-rap Superman or some shit” (Village Voice)
”Retard disco-style geek-rap phenomenon” (The Phoenix)
”The 21-year-old neon jam shorts and spectacles clad-rapper is unlike anything you’ve seen, or heard” (Nylon Mag)
”Every person who’s ever seen me knows. . . it’s ridiculous” (Juiceboxxx)
Toukokuun lopulla Helsinkiin saapuu viime vuoden FLOW-festivaaleilla vierailleen CocoRosien ystäväbändi Bunny Rabbit, joka esiintyy FAG YOU! - klubilla Helsingin Kuudennella Linjalla sunnuntaina 25. päivä toukokuuta osana yhtyeen reilun kuukauden mittaista Euroopan kiertuetta.
New Yorkin Brooklynista kotoisin olevat Melisa Rinco alias Bunny Rabbit ja hänen partnerinsa Celena Glenn alias Black Cracker ovat tehneet yhdessä musiikkia jo muutamien vuosien ajan. Duon musiikki on salakavalan tarttuva sekoitus sokerisia melodioita ja synkkiä, hikisiä elektrocrunk-biittejä. Yhtyeen on sanottu olevan kuin CocoRosien tanssittavampi versio, ja sen soundia on verrattu muun muassa M.I.A.:an, Peachesiin ja Lady Sovereigniin. Bunny Rabbit saa omien sanojensa mukaan vaikutteita niin märistä unista, New Yorkin poliisista, katedraaleista, paholaisesta, ystävänpäivästä, suojelusenkeleistä, apinoista, painajaisista kuin takapuolta hytkyttävistä bassoistakin.
Muun muassa Glass Candyn kanssa aiemmin esiintymislavoja jakaneen Bunny Rabbitin esikoisalbumi “Lovers&Crypts” ilmestyi vuosi sitten CocoRosien johtamalla VoodooEROS-kollektiivin levymerkillä. Parhaillaan materiaalia uutta albumia varten työstävän yhtyeen FAG YOU! -keikalla tullaan taatusti kuulemaan sellaiset Bunny-hitit kuin ”Saddle Up”, ”Lucky Bunny Foot” ja ”Pussy Queen”.
Illan avaa kotimainen elektrofunk-wonderboy Jaakko Eino Kalevi, ja levyjä soittavat FAG YOU! -klubin dj:t Shoplifter ja Janne X sekä Filthy´n Nasty dj:t. Liput konserttiin maksavat 12 euroa, ja ennakkolippuja myyvät Tiketin toimipisteet kautta maan. Konsertti järjestetään yhteistyönä Fag You! -klubin, Rumban ja Radio Helsingin kanssa.
BUNNYRABBIT (USA)
”I am extremely fond of the deeply odd, occationally obscene art rap of Bunny Rabbit” (New York Times)
”Dancefloors heave when Bunny Rabbit hisses and whispers her perverse sex, drugs, and rock n roll rhymes over some of the most starking basslines this side of Paris” (Dazed And Confused)
”Infectious grooves and booty bouncing bass are destined to become party anthems for the art rap set” (Bust)
”If sex and cussing are your bread and butter, you’ve just found your album of the year” (Pitchfork)
Because Bradford Cox was hidden from most of the crowd, we put our hidden cam on stage. So you can run, you can hide and you can even sit and play in the dark, but gängbängers will find you.
Kesäkuussa Suomeen saapuva pariisilainen elektroduo Zombie-Zombie on yksi kiinnostavimmista uusista ranskalaisnimistä. Versatilelle (mm.
Yhtyeen esikoisalbumi “A Land For Renegades” julkaistiin toukokuun alussa. Duo on aiemmin esiintynyt muun muassa Eurosonic-tapahtumassa Hollannissa ja End Of The Road -festivaalilla Englannissa sekä soittanut esimerkiksi ESG:n ja James Chancen kanssa. Käynnissä olevalla ensimmäisellä pidemmällä Euroopan kiertueellaan Zombie-Zombie jakaa lavoja muun muassa Martin Revin, We Are Wolvesin ja The Go! Teamin kanssa.
Helsingin keikalla Zombie-Zombieta illan avaavat 10-vuotista taivaltaan tänä vuonna juhlistava Echo Is Your Love sekä Come Inside- ja Millioners-jäseniä sisältävä, debyyttialbuminsa toukokuun alussa julkaissut Kap Kap. Turussa ja Tampereella pariisilaisia lämmittelee Murmansk. Liput Kuudennen Linjan konserttiin maksavat 10 euroa, ja ennakkoja myyvät Tiketin toimipisteet.
ZOMBIE-ZOMBIE (FRA)
”Set over wobbly basslines, intermittent chirping, waves of theremin sounds, walls of distorted vocals and police sirens backed by angular disco beats, ‘Driving This Road’ could be a lost Can anthem, 4.5/5” (DJ Mag)
“Kicks off like an epic piece of Carl Craig magic, before being joined by live drums, eerie atmospherics and samples and swirling synths, which all meet together creating a striking crescendo, 3/5” (Mixmag)
“Both tracks are terrifying, in the best way” (Wire)
So when DJ Skatebård was doing his set at the last DIRTY DISCO, which was good i might, this song came on and i had to interrupt to ask, which i hate doing by the way, but i had to know as my mind was a blank. So when i went home that night i got online and was pleasantly surprised that i was easily able to get a re-pressing (sorry collectors, not an original), Unfortunately it was harder to get any information on the track, other than the basic credentials “Chemise released this track, “She Can’t Love You” on Emergency Records in 1982. This track was mastered by the notable Herb Powers Jr and was written and produced by Rickie and Ron Muldrow.”, perhaps someone out there knows a bit more, it would be much appreciated. Well what i really love about this track it is that it stops you dead in your tracks and really stands out from the rest.
“These girls are the best. One could eat them one by one.”

Thanks to Moby Dictator and The Ting Tings for great shows, you can expect to hear more from both of these in the near future. Due to “security” it wasn’t so easy to shoot at the venue, but where these is a will there is a way. Thanks to T.V. for doing the dirty work!
